Planning for Retirement: Mapping Your Destination, Enjoying the Journey

Article Six - 19 June 2025

Here’s my old jigsaw of the world.  Growing up here, I studied those countries in geography but never really thought I’d leave New Zealand, let alone my hometown in South Auckland.  All those magical places that we go to, those destinations waiting for us as we fly across the ocean, then walk through the airbridge from the plane.  The destination at the end of the literal journey.

Over the last few months, I’ve been writing this ongoing story, talking about the six areas of financial planning that include cashflow and risk management, together with investment, tax, retirement, and estate planning.  There are a lot of very similar stories on social media lately, but to set mine apart and grab your eye, I’ve woven the story around, and connected those areas to, my upcoming European adventure.  My stories covered:

      • Planning for retirement (and my travels)
      • Making choices in retirement (and on my plane)
      • Financial planning – mitigating risk (and insuring me and my things)
      • Maintaining perspective when markets are volatile (and chaotic European roads)
      • Enjoying the good life in retirement (and in Italy)

As financial advisers, we talk with our clients to determine their destination, i.e. their goals and objectives.  We advise them on how to get there, and then we go on that journey with them as we work together throughout their investment horizon.  These close relationships that we form are as important as the end goal – as the saying goes, in travel and in life, it’s about the journey, not the destination.

Europe is such a small part of the whole jigsaw, but those few pieces will be my journey soon.  And as for my destination – well, this time it’s a lot of places within this picture, including some that I didn’t get to when I lived in London in my 20s and 30s.  And the journey itself will be the best part – seeing friends and family that I miss and love.

So tell me, where are YOU going?
